Is a Cricut a plotter?
Cricut is an American brand of cutting plotters, or computer-controlled cutting machines, designed for home crafters. The machines are used for cutting paper, felt, vinyl, fabric and other materials such as leather, matboard, and wood. In March 2021, Cricut filed for an IPO.

If you need a vinyl cutter that can also cut a range of other materials, the Cricut Maker 3 is the Rolls Royce option. Able to cut anything from vinyl to basswood, it also works with Cricut's Smart Materials, and you won't need a cutting mat to use them.
What is this? The Cricut doesn't actually print your image. (Your Cricut can draw/write with markers, but that is different.) Design Space sends it to a connected home printer to print your image and then you place the printed sheet of paper or cardstock on your Cricut mat and the Cricut will cut it out.
It scans the design on your computer and converts it to an outline. From there, the machine cuts the design with a sharp blade from a vinyl sheet. Most vinyl cutters look like regular computer printers. With them, you can make stickers, logos, and several designs for your home, office, and clients.
“Vinyl cutters” and “vinyl plotters” refer to the exact same machine. The difference refers to the tool being used in the tool carriage. Cutter (not surprisingly) refers to use of the machine with the knife blade in the tool carriage. Plotter refers to the use of a pen or marker in the tool carriage.
The Knife. The major hardware difference between a vinyl cutter and a vinyl plotter is the use of a knife rather than the use of a pen, as is common in regular vinyl plotters. This allows the machine to cut a pattern rather than simply printing a design over the top of the vinyl.

Cricut is a cutting machine. If your plans are to only cut paper, vinyl and other materials, then you do not need a printer. However, if you want to print and cut your own stickers, boxes, cards and designs, you will definitely need a printer.

Limitations: Vinyl cutters can only cut shapes from solid colors of vinyl. In multiple colored designs, each color must be cut separately and then layered on top of the other like as applying layers onto a substrate. Hence shapes are cut out of solid colors and can't be reproduced with a standalone cutter.
The plotter should be capable of cutting right through the material, as well as through the vinyl but not the backing to create a peel-off sticker, as well as producing perforated cuts.
As well as vinyl, high quality vinyl cutters are able to cut your designs into paper, cardstock, tissue paper, reflectives, thermal transfer material and much more. Some can even emboss your designs on wood and aluminium!

As compared to a plotter, a printer is capable of producing hardcopy at a much faster speed. It basically prints one line at a time and is used for producing text and graphics on physical mediums like papers.
What should I look for when buying a plotter?
The most important factor to consider when choosing the best plotter is the type of work you are doing. These details can include the size, material you are printing on, and the number of colors. Ensure you have the right information before embarking on a plotter purchase.
Types of plotters include the following: Drum plotters, which draw on paper wrapped around a drum that turns to produce one direction of the plot while the pens move to provide the other direction. Flatbed plotters, which draw on paper placed on a flat surface.
A graphics printer that draws images with ink pens. Plotters actually draw point-to-point lines directly from vector graphics files. The plotter was the first computer output device that could print graphics as well as accommodate full-size engineering and architectural drawings.
Three types of plotters are most popular for their ability to allow you to create different designs. This group includes the drum plotter, the flatbed plotter, and the inkjet plotter. Each of these types of plotters has a different specific use, therefore, you must make your choice very carefully.
There mostly six types of plotters they are Drum Plotter, Flatbed Plotter, Inkjet Plotter, Cutting Plotter, Pen Plotter, Thermal Plotter.
Plotter Applications
While plotter printers currently are most often used for CAD, GIS and CAE (Computer-aided engineering) purposes, plotters still print with greater precision than traditional large-format printers.
What Type of Document Would Typically Be Printed on a Plotter? A plotter can print any document. However, the most preferred type of documents that a plotter can print is a vector graphic. Due to the high resolution it produces, plotters are used in technical fields, like engineering, construction, and maps.
Plotters are used primarily in technical drawing and CAD applications, where they have the advantage of working on very large paper sizes while maintaining high resolution. Another use has been found by replacing the pen with a cutter, and in this form plotters can be found in many garment and sign shops.
Who uses plotter printers? The accuracy which a plotter printer provides means that it is ideal for use within the architecture industry for printing blueprints and building designs. Large-format printers also then allow for a whole design to printed on one sheet of paper.
