Why does my printer say low ink when I just refilled it Brother?
The message "Ink Low" will be displayed on the machine's display of the Brother machine if the amount of remaining ink in one or more of the ink tanks is low. This error message may appear if the ink dot counter is incorrect even if a lot of ink remains.
Check that the machine power is turned ON and install the ink cartridges. If the machine is powered-off, it cannot detect when the ink cartridges are installed. Each colour has its own correct position - match the colour of the cartridges with the colour of the levers. Reinstall the ink cartridges one at a time.
If the message "No Cartridge" does not disappear, unplug the machine from the AC power outlet and wait approximately 10 seconds, and then plug it back in. If the date and time appear on the display, the issue is resolved. If you still have the same problem, please contact Brother Customer Service from "Contact Us".
This error occurs due to the chip on your cartridge still reporting a low or empty ink level from its previous use. The chip itself cannot be reset, so when the cartridge is refilled and then installed into a new machine it will still register as empty.

There are chips inside the original cartridges to record how many pages were printed and they cannot be reset. As a result the printer reads the chips and tells you that the cartridges are empty, even though they are not. This is why you are getting the "ink low" message even though the ink tank is at full capacity.
- Press the tiny reset button located beside the chip and hold for 10 seconds. Depending on the brand and model of the cartridge, you may not need to hold the button for 10 seconds, but it won't harm the cartridge so do it anyway just to be safe.
- Done.
Can you override printer cartridge empty?
You can print when one printer cartridge is empty by adjusting your printer's settings. However, it will depend on how lenient your printer is. Numerous HP printers today, however, have been programmed to block you from printing when one printer cartridge is empty.
The reset button is typically located at the top of the cartridge. A paper clip or similar object will be needed to press it. Once you've found the reset button, hold it down for about five seconds and release it. The printer should start up again and should be able to recognize the cartridge.

You can continue printing with the toner cartridge beyond its estimated print life by enabling "Continue Mode". Continue Mode will force the machine to continue printing after the error message or the Status Monitor message indicates Replace Toner.
If the unit were to continue printing, print jobs and cleaning cycles would suck air from the empty cartridge and damage the print head. However, your Brother machine exceptionally can operate in a B&W Print Only (black and white) mode when one or more colour ink cartridges are empty.
Be sure to reset the ink level after refilling the ink. If you refilled two or more colors, you need to select all of the colors that you refilled and reset the ink level.
Select your printer then press “Manage” Select “Printing Preferences” Click on the “Maintenance” tab on the far right. From there you should be able to see ink levels for your selected printer.

The quick answer is: Yes, you can (if you own a printer model that allows it) — but you shouldn't keep printing with an empty cartridge for too long. Why? Because running on an empty cartridge for too long can cause your printhead to overheat resulting in irreversible printer damage.
